How obesity affects if you are a patient with COVID-19

As we already know, COVID 19 is the most recently discovered infectious disease caused by the coronavirus.

Obesity and COVID-19

This new virus and the disease it causes were unknown before the outbreak broke out in Wuhan (China) in December 2019. We are currently experiencing a pandemic due to the rapid infection of the virus in people.

Several recent scientific articles suggest that obesity is a risk factor for patients who contract coronavirus.

Being overweight or obese already have a condition of inflammation in the body. But it does not refer to what is at first glance as the extra kilos, but a very important condition at the cellular level.

This factor is due to excess adipose tissue (that is, fat reversal) as it can further increase the factors that promote inflammation in the body compared to people who don’t have this condition.

There are reports that overweight patients admitted to hospitals for COVID-19 require more frequent invasive mechanical ventilation, compared to thin patients, regardless of age, sex or diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. This leads to patients being admitted to intensive care areas and requiring special attention and greater care.
