What is lactose?
It is a sugar found in milk and many dairy products.
What is lactase?
Lactase is an enzyme produced in the small intestine that is generated in all people during childhood. Its primary function is to convert lactose into simpler sugars (glucose and galactose)
Lactase is produced in an area of the intestine called the "brush border," where the absorption of most of the nutrients we eat occurs.
Lactose intolerance occurs when the small intestine doesn’t produce enough to break down lactose.
Symptoms appear when we drink milk or eat any dairy derivative. The most common symptoms of this condition are:
- Abdominal pain or swelling
How to know if you are lactose intolerant?
If you've had any of these symptoms while eating dairy, there's a good chance that you have the condition. It is best to consult your doctor. He will do a series of exams or tests to determine if you really suffer from this disorder.
