Vitamin A. What is it and what functions does it fulfill in our body?

Vitamin A, also called retinoic acid, is a fat-soluble compound that the body needs since it isn’t capable of producing it on its own. It is necessary to correctly fulfill the different functions of the organism and it is obtained basically from the diet

It participates in important functions of vision, bone growth, the development and functioning of the reproductive system, cellular functions and activation of the immune system.

Vitamin A intervenes in the functions of the skin, so its deficiency in the diet is usually related to the appearance of acne. Helps the development of bones, teeth, soft tissues, mucous membranes and skin.

It also helps in the formation of the retina of the eye, which is why it gets its name from retinoic acid or retinol.

It participates in the functions of the immune system and helps fight different infectious diseases, especially of the respiratory system, or other pathologies such as measles.

This vitamin also favors the production of sperm and contributes to the female reproductive cycle, favoring the changes that occur in cells during the development of the fetus.

Lack of vitamin A can make a person more prone to infections, vision problems such as night blindness or skin rashes.

Its excess, on the other hand, can cause diseases such as anorexia, excessive weight loss, alopecia or very strong headaches.
