For a long time, many are the practitioners of Yogasana in different parts of Inida and to date, this sport is recognized as a “competitive sport” by the Ministry of Sport.
The Minister of Sports, Kiren Rijiju, and the Minister of AYUSH, Shripad Yesso Naik, spoke on the formal appointment of yogasana as a competitive sport. On Thursday, the Ministry of Sports formally recognized yogasana as a competitive sport, which will allow the ancient practice is funded by the government.
This recognition had long been in a constant struggle to achieve recognition from the state, so now, by declaring itself as a competitive sport, it is easier to have the government's support in financial expenses and further promote its practice.
The move was made to promote yoga, spread awareness of all the health benefits of this great sport, and help improve people's physical and mental well-being.
Yogasana has been a competitive sport for a long time. But it has to be recognized by the Government of India for it to become an official and recognized competitive sport. Today is a great day, we are formally launching it as a competitive sport and I am sure it will go a long way.
They were the words of the sports minister Kiren Rijiju
An International Yogasana Sports Federation was formed under the presidency of yoga teacher Baba Ramdev with DR HR Nagendra as general secretary in November last year.
A National Yogasana Sports Federation of India (NYSFI) was also established for the preservation and development of yoga as a competitive sport. It was recognized by the Ministry of Sports as the National Sports Federation (NSF) last month.
Rijiju said that the Sports Ministry will start by providing financial support to these federations so that they can reach their goal for next year. This becomes the first step of many who will come for the famous sport.
